Football Alliance 2017 - 18: Third Division Clubs and Colours

The expanded Third Division for the new season will feature three clubs from the Scottish Championship - Arbroath, Partick Thistle and Stenhousemuir - and Welsh champions SG Caernarfon in addition to Merthyr Tydfil and Wimbledon Tooting & Mitcham, relegated from the Second Division, eight members of the previous third tier and newcomers Locomotive York and Oxford Albania, replacing the bottom two Liverpool Hibernian and Tadcaster Albion who have returned to the regional leagues rather than take up places in the new Fourth Division. Of the existing Third Division clubs, Urmston Villa have reverted to an Italian nomenclature and will be known as Inter-Stella Rossa, the Anglo-Scots Newcastle Caledonia Thistle have ceased to be as such and reborn under the historical name of Newcastle United, the original incarnation of which were twice Football Alliance champions in the early years of this millenium, and Sunderland Automotive have dropped that suffix and will be known as their pre-merger and reconstitution 'Red Star' once more.

'Home' and Change Colours 2015-16 #29: Newcastle-Gateshead Dynamo

Formed during this summer from a merger between Gateshead Dynamo and Newcastle United, the latter of whom were relegated from the Second Division at the end of last season, having been controversially elected, as a then fourth tier club, to the new two-division national league structure.

Newcastle United and Gateshead United were both original members of the Football Alliance, in the Championship and First Division respectively.

Relegated from the top flight at the end of the second season, 1981-82, Newcastle United spent 20 years out of the Championship before returning in 2002, going on to win the league in 2004 and retain their championship the following season, one of only four clubs to have successfully defended their title in the Alliance's history to date. After this period of success, they were relegated from the Championship in 2010 and the First Division in 2012.

Gateshead United, who became Dynamo for last season, had a less prominent league career, but spent a total of 8 seasons in two spells in the Championship, most notably a six-term stay from 1999 to 2005, otherwise spending their time at the second and third level.



Name Change #3: Newcastle-Gateshead Dynamo

In another of the summer’s rebranding exercises, Second Division Gateshead Dynamo have announced a merger with Newcastle United, relegated from the Football Alliance at the conclusion of last season, and will henceforth be known as Newcastle-Gateshead Dynamo.

With the league championship already decided in Stalybridge Celtic's favour, attention was focussed on the other end of the table today, with Matlock Town needing to win at potential runners-up and Cup finalists Gainsborough Trinity, a squad motivated by the fight for a starting place in the final, and hoping that Marlow wouldn't prevail at faltering Blyth Spartans (the other Cup finalists next weekend) in order to leapfrog the deposed champions and escape the clutches of relegation.

Alas for them, although Marlow duly lost in Northumberland, a fitting end to a truly miserable campaign, Matlock failed spectacularly to capitalise, victims of an 8 - 1 trashing by Trinity - who thus confirmed second place and moved a point closer to Stalybridge after Celtic, in celebratory mood, were held by Manchester City - and will therefore accompany Oxford Excelsior, who enjoyed a valedictory victory over Northwich Victoria, down into next season's Second Division.

Elsewhere in the top flight, more goals flowed - eight at Wrexham as they beat hopeless travellers Mossley 5- 3, seven at Audenshaw as the Dynamo edged Hungaria 4- 3, and five each for Hartlepool United and Liverpool St Helens as they both signed-off in fine style with thumping to-nil victories.

The nerves again afflicted those jostling for promotion from the Second Division, all of which meant that, despite losing by a single goal at Bradford City, Marine still finished top of the pile and go up, while Spartak-Slavia's draw at home to Nelson CBR enabled them to accompany Marine in second place, staying that crucial point ahead of Crewe Alexandra after the latter could only earn a share of eight goals at Inter-Italiano, running out of time after at one stage being 1 - 4 behind.

At the opposite end, Newcastle United, controversially elevated to the second tier before the season kicked-off, beat city neighbours Blue Star but that ultimately wasn't enough to save them from finishing in last place, and demotion back to the regional leagues, as Crystal Palace rescued themselves with a vital 2 - 0 victory over Merthyr Tydfil, also enabling them to climb and finish above the South Walians.
