Rebranded over the summer as 'Central', Manchester City were founder members of the original First Division (second tier) of the Football Alliance, winning promotion to the Championship in 1983. After frequently flirting with relegation, City were demoted in 1990, finally returning to the top flight in 2008, where they achieved three successive runners-up positions between 2011-12 and 2013-14 before finishing fifth last season.
