Telstar St Helens 4 Dynamo Mossley 1
The 2018 - 19 Football Alliance league season kicked-off this evening with its traditional curtain-raiser featuring the first match of the reigning champions.
Newly renamed 'Telstar' St Helens served immediate notice of their intention to defend their title with an impressive victory over last term's runners-up (such are the vagaries of the fixture computer) Mossley (who have themselves rebranded as 'Dynamo' from the previous 'Red Star'), who indeed tied on points with the former Liverpool St Helens but were just pipped to the post on the rivals' head-to-head record.
The remainder of the first round of league fixtures - this season comprising a Championship and Second Division at national level, streamlined down from last term's four divisions and shedding the 10 Scottish clubs whose admission to the league structure proved to be a failed experiment - will be played tomorrow evening with the results being published subsequently.
